Harbin Electric Corporation
Harbin Electric Corporation is one of the earliest established research and manufacturing bases for power generation equipment in China. It grew from six of the 156 key construction projects aided by the Soviet Union during the First Five-Year Plan, primarily based on the three major power plants (motor factory, boiler factory, and turbine factory) in Harbin, construction of which began in 1951. It is a major state-owned enterprise under central government management, crucial to national security and the national economy.
After more than 70 years of development, the company has formed an industrial layout mainly focusing on hydropower, nuclear power, coal-fired power, gas-fired power, wind power, marine power plants, electrical drive equipment, power engineering general contracting, financial services, and investment. It has produced over 470 million kilowatts of power generation equipment, equipping more than 800 large and medium-sized power plants (excluding wind power) at home and abroad. Large hydropower units account for half of the total installed capacity of domestically produced units, coal-fired and nuclear power main equipment and heavy-duty gas turbines each account for one-third of the total installed capacity of domestically produced units. Products are exported to more than 60 countries and regions in Asia, Africa, Europe, and America.
The company possesses one national-level enterprise technology center, two national key laboratories, three national engineering (technology) research centers, four postdoctoral workstations, and two academician workstations. Its technologies in large hydropower, nuclear power, and clean coal-fired power are internationally leading. It has won four special prizes, four first prizes, and nineteen second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, accumulating over 200 "firsts in the Republic." It has forged a unique path of innovation through introduction, digestion, absorption, and re-innovation, leading the development of China's power generation equipment industry from nothing to something, from small to large, and from weak to strong, achieving leapfrog development.
