China Railway Construction Corporation
China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC) is a super-large enterprise group integrating surveying and design, construction and installation, industrial manufacturing, real estate development, resource minerals, financial investment and other businesses. Its headquarters is located in Beijing, China. As one of the world's largest construction engineering contractors, CRCC has been among the world's top 500 enterprises for 16 consecutive years, ranking 35th in the Fortune Global 500 in 2021 and 5th in the China Top 500 Enterprises.
China Railway Construction has a history of over a hundred years. Established in March 1950 as the Engineering and Design Bureaus of the Ministry of Railways, it later became the Ministry of Railways' General Bureau of Capital Construction. In July 1989, the State Council approved the abolition of the General Bureau of Capital Construction and the establishment of the China Railway Engineering Corporation. In September 2000, it was separated from the Ministry of Railways and placed under the management of the Central Committee for Large Enterprises. In May 2003, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council assumed the role of investor. On September 12, 2007, China Railway Engineering Corporation solely initiated the establishment of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, which was listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on December 3 and December 7, 2007, respectively. In December 2017, it was restructured from a wholly state-owned enterprise into a wholly state-owned company and renamed China Railway Engineering Group Co., Ltd.
China Railway Construction holds special-grade qualifications for railway engineering general contracting, Class A qualifications for highway engineering general contracting, and Class A qualifications for municipal public works general contracting, as well as Class A qualifications for specialized contracting of bridge engineering, tunnel engineering, highway subgrade, and pavement engineering, urban rail transit engineering specialized contracting qualifications, and possesses the qualification certificates for foreign economic cooperation and import and export enterprises of the People's Republic of China.
China Railway Construction has participated in the construction of more than two-thirds of China's total railway mileage; the electrified railways built account for 90% of China's electrified railways; the expressways it has participated in building account for about one-eighth of China's total expressway mileage; and it has constructed three-fifths of China's urban rail transit projects.
China Railway Construction's business scope covers almost all basic construction fields, including railways, highways, municipal works, building construction, urban rail transit, water conservancy and hydropower, airports, ports, wharves, etc., and can provide a full range of turnkey services in the construction industry. In addition, the company implements a limited related diversification strategy, and has also made good progress in surveying and design consulting, industrial equipment and parts manufacturing, real estate development, mineral resource development, expressway operation, and finance.
China Railway Construction has accumulated rich experience in extra-large bridges, deep-water bridges, long tunnels, railway electrification, bridge steel structures, shield and high-speed turnout R&D and manufacturing, and test field construction, forming unique management and technological advantages. In terms of bridge construction technology, many construction technologies are at the world's advanced level; tunnel and urban subway construction technology is at the domestic leading level, with some technologies reaching the world's advanced level; and railway electrification technology represents the current highest level in China.
China Railway Construction boasts leading mechanical equipment. It owns the largest number of tunnel boring machines (shield, TBM) in China, Asia's largest lifting capacity crane ship, a complete set of deep-water offshore operation and construction equipment, the largest number of bridge erecting machines and track laying machines used in railway construction in China, and the largest number of overhead contact line construction equipment used in electrified railway construction in China. The company can independently develop and manufacture specialized heavy machinery with internationally advanced levels, and is one of the three companies in the world that can independently produce TBMs and own the intellectual property rights.
China Railway Construction is one of the first batch of "innovative enterprises" awarded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, and the All-China Federation of Trade Unions. It has won a total of 127 national science and technology progress and invention awards, including 5 special awards and 16 first-class awards; 167 China Tu Mu Engineering Zhan Tianyou Awards; 4253 provincial and ministerial level (including nationally recognized social awards) science and technology progress awards; 24,973 patents, including 5,157 invention patents and 157 overseas patents; and 166 national-level construction methods and 4609 provincial and ministerial-level construction methods. The company owns three national laboratories: the "National Engineering Research Center for High-speed Railway Construction Technology," the "National Key Laboratory for Shield and Excavation Technology," and the "National Key Laboratory for Bridge Structural Health and Safety," as well as the "National-Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Digital Rail Transit Technology Research and Application"; 10 postdoctoral workstations, 36 provincial and ministerial-level R&D centers (laboratories), 19 nationally recognized technology centers, and 107 provincially and ministerially recognized enterprise technology centers, and has successively established 20 professional R&D centers.
China Railway Construction currently has approximately 290,000 employees, including more than 85,000 mid-to-senior technical personnel, more than 2,400 senior professionals, and 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
